Design Printed Onto Film
Adhesive Powder Applied
Transfer Cured
Heat Pressed Onto Garment
The DTF process begins with your artwork being printed in reverse onto a special PET film using water-based inks. A hot-melt adhesive powder is then applied to the wet ink and cured in an oven. The finished transfer is then ready to be heat pressed onto virtually any fabric at the right temperature and pressure.
This process eliminates the need for screens, weeding, or minimum order quantities — making DTF one of the most flexible and cost-effective decoration methods available today.

DTF vs Screen Printing
| Feature | DTF Transfers | Screen Printing |
|---|---|---|
| Small Orders | ✅ Excellent | ❌ Expensive |
| Full Color | ✅ Easy | ⚠️ Limited |
| Fabric Types | ✅ Most Fabrics | ⚠️ Limited |
| Setup Costs | ✅ Low | ❌ High |
| Speed | ✅ Fast | ⚠️ Slower |
| Detail Quality | ✅ High | ⚠️ Moderate |
DTF transfers are the clear winner for small runs, full-color designs, and versatility across fabric types. Screen printing can be cost-effective for very large orders of simple, single-color designs — but for most custom apparel needs, DTF delivers superior results with far less hassle and setup cost.

Can DTF transfers go on cotton?
Yes. DTF works extremely well on cotton shirts, producing vibrant, long-lasting prints with a soft hand feel.
Can DTF transfers go on polyester?
Yes. DTF transfers are excellent for polyester and athletic wear, with no dye migration issues common with other methods.
Best Heat Press Settings for DTF Transfers
Recommended Starting Settings
Why are my DTF transfers peeling?
Peeling is most often caused by insufficient pressure or temperature that's too low. Make sure your heat press is fully preheated and apply firm, even pressure across the entire transfer.
What pressure should I use?
Medium to firm pressure is recommended. 70psi for a pneumatic press or 7 on a manual press.
Hot peel or cold peel?
Most DTF transfers are hot peel — remove the film immediately after pressing while still warm. Always check the instructions included with your specific transfers.

Common DTF Problems & Fixes
Why is my transfer peeling?
Usually caused by low pressure or incorrect temperature. Increase pressure and ensure your press is at 280°F–300°F.
Why does my print look dull?
Artwork resolution may be too low. Always use 300 DPI PNG files with transparent backgrounds or vector graphics for best results.
Why is the transfer lifting after washing?
There wasn't enough heat or pressure when it was pressed. Ensure you press for the full 8–10 seconds with firm pressure. And press a second time with a piece of duck cloth or something similar.
Why is there scorching on my shirt?
This actually isn't scorching. What you are seeing is press marks. Scorching is burning. Press marks happen because of the pressure being applied. Cotton and blended materials will rebound after washing. Polyester doesn't rebound so use felt strips on the edges of your heat press. Attach the strips with magnets. Make sure to cover the entire garment with duck cloth or something similar on your second press. Temperature may also be too high for the garment. You can press polyester at lower temperatures. We do not recommend going below 260°F.
